What Makes People Attractive?

From an evolutionary perspective, we are attracted to people whom we perceive as beautiful and attractive, such as those with symmetrical features because it tends to signify good genetics. It is also a biological advert which tells prospective partners that good genes will be found in this body.

Facial symmetry is also linked to agreeableness, extraversion and conscientiousness, so good looking people generally find it easier to make friends and hold down jobs.

While you might not be able to change your face and body features, here are some hacks you can use to make yourself more attractive.

Firstly, if you are a man, you can hack your facial symmetry by growing facial hair. Paying attention to your natural face shape is rule number one. If your face is circular or squared off, that means the width and length of your face are almost equal. You need a beard that is going to add some length. If your face shape is rectangular or oblong, a long beard will only make your face look longer. You will want to keep longer sides instead to add symmetry.

Secondly, take care of your skin. Research suggests that taking care of your skin with sunscreen, ample sleep and a healthy diet can boost your good looks across the board.

Thirdly, smiling goes a long way. In two experiments, researchers in Switzerland examined the relationship between attractiveness and smiling. They found that the stronger the smile, the more attractive a face looked. In fact, a happy facial expression compensated for relative unattractiveness.

Lastly, be nice. We like this one because it is also common sense. A 2014 Chinese study of 120 people found that when people hear about how nice somebody is, they find the person’s face more attractive. A critical difference between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom is that we value good character over physical attraction. Honesty, kindness and faithfulness are traits that the study discovered, make people more attractive.
