Shah Rukh Khan is the second richest actor in the world, behind US comedian Jerry Seinfeld. That’s because King Khan, or SRK, as he is affectionately known, is not just an actor, but one with a reputation among showbiz circles for having a business-savvy mind.
Richer Than Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp
In contrast, Hollywood star Tom Cruise, is ranked third with US$480 million, while Johnny Depp hovers at US$450 million, and Tom Hanks makes the top 10 list.
Shah Rukh Khan is the first movie star to own three sports teams. In 2008, he invested in his first cricket team, the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. A year later, the team became one of the richest in the IPL with a value of US$42 million.
His latest acquisition now is the Cape Town cricket team in the South African Premier League headed by marquee player JP Duminy.
Aside from sports team, he too has a sizeable stake in the Indian franchisee of KidZania, a Mexican chain of family entertainment centres for children.
Being an actor, SRK wanted to create his own films too. His studio, the Red Chilles VFX is one of largest visual studios in India. The production unit, which began in 2002 has churned out a great number of hit movies, such as superhero blockbluster Ra.One which became the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2011, and enjoyed the largest international theatrical release in that year.
So successful is the actor in building his business empire, that SRK is often referred to as ‘Brand SRK’. That includes his multiple endorsements of big brands like Pepsi, Hyundai, LUX and TAG Heuer.
There’s even the actor’s wax figure in Madame Tussauds museums around the world.
SRK isn’t stopping anytime soon. Now he wants buy his own private plane to scoot off to his many luxury homes, and continue to invest in more studios.
As he says, “I would like to invest in a world-class studio in India. For me, the making nation (India) in the world has the shoddiest studios to make films. Right now, I can’t afford a studio, but with god’s grace, I will. The returns on studios, I have been told, take 35-45 years”.
But hey, when ‘Brand SRK’ invests in something, he’ll definitely get his money’s worth.
