Weddings are big business, and your wedding day is one of the most important (if not the most important) day of your life. But which Asian weddings have stood out as the most noteworthy?

1. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas (2018)
Priyanka Chopra wed Nick Jonas in a three-day long extravaganza in Rajasthan. The bride wore a hand-embroidered Ralph Lauren gown with a 75-foot long tulle veil. Guests included Nick’s brothers Kevin and Joe, Joe’s fiancée Sophie Turner (aka Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones) and Bollywood stars Salman Khan, A.R. Rahman and Rekha.

2. Crown Prince Akihito and Michiko Shoda (1959)
Crown Prince Akihito (now Emperor Akihito) wed Michiko Shoda in a Shinto ceremony followed by a wedding procession through Tokyo attended by more than half-a-million well-wishers. It was also the first Japanese imperial wedding to be televised, attracting 1.5 million viewers.

3. Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan (2007)
Former Miss World and Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai wed fellow star Abhishek Bachchan (son of beloved Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan) in 2007. The wedding was held at Amitabh Bachchan’s residence in Mumbai. Rai wore a traditional Kanjeevaram saree encrusted with Swarovski crystals.

4. Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal (2018)
Isha (daughter of India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani) and Anand Piramal were married in a lavish ceremony in late 2018. The wedding festivities started with an exclusive live performance by Beyoncé. Guests included Hillary Clinton, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Vidya Balan. The estimated cost of the wedding was USD 15 million.

5. Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan (2015)

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou married model Hannah Quinlivan in Selby Abbey in Yorkshire, England. The bride wore a dress by Canadian designer Mikael Derderian, while the groom wore Alexander McQueen. The reception was held at Castle Howard, a stately English home dating back over 300 years.

6. Rain and Kim Tae Hee (2017)
K-pop star Rain tied the knot with actress Kim Tae Hee in a low-key event in 2017 in Seoul. The wedding was attended by other Korean celebrities including Psy, Park Jin-young and members of K-pop group g.o.d. The couple reportedly surprised guests with a romantic duet.

7. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Sirikit Kitiyakara (1950)
The royal couple married at Srapathum Palace just a week before the late- and much-beloved King of Thailand’s coronation. They went on to have four children and were married for 66 years until the king’s death in 2016.

8. Princess Ayako and Kei Moriya (2018)
Japanese Princess Ayako gave up her royal title to marry commoner Kei Moriya. The pair exchanged vows at Tokyo’s Meiji Shrine. They have expressed an intention to ‘create a family filled with smiles’.

9. Feiping Chang and Lincoln Li (2017)
Hong Kong ‘It girl’ Feiping Chang married financier Lincoln Li in a three-day celebration in Capri, Italy. The bride wore multiple costumes designed Giambattista Valli dresses, with unique Jasmine-cut diamonds from Nirav Modi. The bridesmaids wore white dresses designed by the bride’s friend Han Chong of Self-Portrait.

10. Carina Lau and Tony Leung (2008)
The bride and groom had been together for decades before finally tying the knot in Bhutan in 2012. Their Buddhist ceremony took place at the luxury Uma Paro Hotel resort. Guests included Faye Wong, Brigitte Lin and Wong Kar Wai.

11. Puyi and Wan Rong (1922)
The wedding of the last emperor of China took place in the Forbidden City under moonlight according to Manchu tradition. The bride entered through the Meridian Gate on the Phoenix Chair and the couple wed in a traditional imperial ceremony. Both were just 16 years old.

12. Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan, and Jetsun Pema (2011)
The King of Bhutan married Jetsun Pema in a traditional Buddhist ceremony at the Punakha Dzong (or ‘Palace of Bliss’) in the old capital city of Punakha. Among the wedding gifts were tulips from the Netherlands named ‘Queen of Bhutan’ after the new queen. Although the King of Bhutan is permitted to have multiple wives, the king has said that Jetsun Pema will be his only wife. The couple welcomed a son in 2016.
